Leadership Lessons from the LPG Shortage: Planning for Community Resilience

Living in Kerala, the recent LPG shortage hit close to home. I saw neighbors waiting days for cylinder refills, local eateries struggling to serve meals, and school kitchens improvising to feed children. It was a stark reminder that even in well-connected states, supply chain disruptions can ripple through daily life and affect the most vulnerable.
Kerala depends heavily on commercial and domestic LPG, and when deliveries slowed, small businesses reported up to 40–45% revenue losses. Restaurants, bakeries, and catering services faced operational halts, while households scrambled to ensure cooking fuel. Seeing this, I realized that leadership is not only about managing teams but also about anticipating community challenges and responding proactively.
For me, this situation highlighted three key lessons:
Prioritize People: Decisions must account for the human impact, not just operational efficiency.
Plan for Contingencies: Alternative energy sources, diversified suppliers, and local resource strategies are essential.
Communicate Transparently: Clear updates prevent panic, hoarding, and confusion.
The LPG shortage in Kerala is more than a supply issue; it is a lesson in resilience. Supporting small businesses, families, and communities during disruptions requires foresight, empathy, and collaborative action. As a professional and a member of this community, I am reminded that building resilience isn’t optional, it’s a responsibility.
This experience will shape how I lead teams, design operations, and contribute to my community in the months and years ahead.
